Deming to Silver City, New Mexico, Spork

The last 4 days have taken us from the hot and windy desert floor to a windy fire tower over 10,000 feet. The beginning of each hike presents a lot of challenge. The climbs have been steep and long. The trail disappears right as you get in your rhythm. It has been frustrating at times but liberating and beautiful since we have left the border. We have the freedom to choose our own path. On the other trails you are bound to a 3 foot wide swatch of dirt, rocks or sand. We have been wandering through wide open desert and pine-covered mountains with a general idea of direction and most importantly water.
The trail magic has been abundant. Also known as random acts of kindness from total strangers. We haven’t had a problem hitching rides. A guy we met at a restaurant randomly showed back up and have Kipper a reel for his fishing rod. We are going to be eating good on the Gila! My faith in humanity is quickly coming back!
We will be headed into the Gila wilderness and past a community of cave dwellings. We will be passing over the river somewhere around a hundred times. That’s what we hear anyway. Wet feet for days on end are nearing. Hopefully my feet stay strong. Life is good and the journey continues!
